Button Mashers is a periodic audio podcast covering a range of topics in the gaming industry. This blog was created for myself, Tetsuotrunks, as well as a few guest co-hosts, to contribute our 2 cents on topics that really don't warrant any discussion, or to just express things that we'd like to get off our chests. Check back often, as we update frequently and feel free to leave any feedback.

Welcome to your Future

Hey guys. Hope everyone enjoyed the dull boring news show that was this year's E3. I think its fairly obvious that not only is E3 no longer the behemoth show it once was, its now little more than a chance for the big three to masturbate themselves on stage. Only this time they're disappointed when we don't take it and ask for more. In light of the fact that this show gave us little in the way of surprise (Sony delayed something, Microsoft copied something and Nintendo announced a sequel to something), I'd been thinking about the companies themselves, rather than their products since, lets face it, there aren't many worth getting excited about. Which brings me to my question of the day (and this requires as much audience participation as possible).

So here's the question: You can pick any 2 companies in the gaming industry to work for (one or the other). It can be developers, publishers, advertising agencies, etc. You can work WITH anyone specifically or in a general role (i.e. Dennis Dyack's personal assistant, or a programmer somewhere in Sony). It can even be a media company (IGN, EGM, etc.). Who would you pick and why? And yeah, I know its a summer writing assignment, but I want to get some people to participate. So come on people, who do you work for in your dream life and why?
Mutated controllers

So after Ninty announced basically their only thing at E3, the MotionPlus which basically makes the motion controls more accurate, it got me thinking about the HUGE amount of peripherals we're being made to buy into these days.

Remember the old days? You only had to pay out for an extra controller, then if you bought games, you were made. Taking the Wii as an obvious example, how much extra crap do have to buy?

Does Older Mean Better?

So, the word is that Megaman 9 will be released on Wiiware (possibly in the US) by the end of the year and that Chrono Trigger DS will be out in all the territories that are important to the gaming world (sorry Europe, its not my opinion, its just theirs) by the end of this year as well. These two present an interesting case study. On the one hand, we have a game that we're (mostly) happy that it retains its classic look and feel; Megaman 9 will look and play exactly like any of the games its meant to be connected to. On the other hand, we have Chrono Trigger DS, which (while not even believed to be a serious rumor until a day before its official announcement) managed to disappoint most of its target audience by not improving any in the visuals department.

Bit of a double standard eh? The sequel to an NES classic gets praised for not changing a thing while the SNES masterpiece is frowned upon for being the exact same game we all remember (those of us that got it) from a decade ago. So what gives? 2 different audiences? I suppose you could make that argument since its 2 different genres, but I'm not really satisfied with that answer. People expect different things from Capcom than they do from Squeenix? Again, true, but not satisfactory. Plus, look at the visual upgrades Square gave to previous FF games. Last time I checked, FF3 and 4 were not in 3-D upon their initial release. So what gives?

I LIVE!!! For a limited time only!

Yo, everyone. Sorry I've been gone for so long.

I figure you all would like an explanation, so here's what all happened since my last post on May 15th (has it really been that long?):

My computer was entering its final days to live, anyway, and during that weekend, the hard drive died along with the motherboard. Many parts were defective or low-quality upon breaking time, so I figured the best way to go about it would be to junk the computer altogether (save for my network card, the processor, and the floppy drive). The immeadiate plan was to use my parents' computer for updating, but that thing has more defective material than a Howard Stern broadcast. Basically, a virus hit and permanently fucked up the Internet Cookies, so there was no way I could log in to ANYTHING; my e-mail client, my websites, anything. Took me a week or two just to get AIM and a non-cookie e-mail account going. I offered to fix this junk of a PC, but my parents refused, basically saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

So that was that. Earlier this month, I found a nice Gateway quad-core PC for cheap on woot.com, so I bought it. After a few days of modding and updating, I'm ready to handle the Button Masher blogs once more, but only until I get booted from this house in September. From there, I don't know what's going to happen.

Now that the explanation is out of the way, I'd like to give a big thanks to Biccy for replacing my Wensday posts, and that he continues to update every Wensday right here on BM Blogs.

But what will that leave me? Well, I've been saving this for a long time. Best to reveal it now.

Hm...BRAWL

Not much has happened recently, that I know of anyway. I've been in my room playing a certain game anyway that came out last week, so even if Josh had been announced as the new leader of the KFC religion, I probably would've missed it trying to hit over 500m in the homerun contest.

So instead, you get to read about me talking about Brawl, yay! Take a deep breath because by the time you have to let it out again, you may have finished reading.
