As long as its whoring out anyway...

A little short today, but at least its on time. Early, in fact by my normal Friday standards.
I was looking over the preview for Guitar Hero:Aerosmith, and I realized what the problem I had with the game is. It isn't that I don't like them branching out (I don't LOVE it, but I can live with it), its that I don't think they're branching out in the right way. Rock Band was a great example of what happens when you take a good concept and effectively stretch it out. Thus, in that same vein, I bring you 5 new music game concepts. Prepare to be blown away. With AWESOME(or suck...we haven't worked out all the bugs yet).

JT news, part 2

So, first off, forgive me for 1) this being late, and 2) missing 8-Bits last night. My internet provider decided that it would be fun times for all to cut off their services. The internet at my house just came back on at around 9PM Eastern Standard Time, so yeah. Their fault, not mine, but I apologize, anyway.
Y'know, I thought the news on Jack Thompson's Bar Trial ruling would be sent in by now, but I guess I was wrong. Judge Dava Tunis is sure taking his time reaching a decision.

Better late or Never?

First and foremost; for the 3 of you who haven't heard,
So MTV and Harmonix have FINALLY announced Rock Band for Wii formally. Not that we didn't know it was coming, but honestly, at this point, its nice to see that we Wii owners will have all the opportunities afforded to our friends who have 360s and PS3s. Namely; Online Leaderboards, World Tour Mode and most importantly, Downloadable Content. Wait, what? You mean we get NONE of that? We're getting a PS2 port? Oh. Well, yeah, that makes a lot more sense. Thats clearly why they delayed it for months. To port the title from PS2. Gee....thanks?

Revenge of The (Sports) Nerds

Edit: I totally wrote this up Thursday night since I didn't work on Friday and therefore expected to not post. Sadly, I was right. I promise one of these days I'll actually stick to my self-imposed schedule. But not posting on time actually became a good thing. See below.
I'm a big baseball fan as well as a video gamer, and as such, I am one of the relatively small number of people that are actually targeted to buy Baseball sim video games. Now, this might seem odd for me to emphasize how much I enjoy sports games when I usually blast EA for Madden, but the truth is, the last 3 baseball games I've played are all distinctly different games. First off is Mario Superstar Baseball, which Brian and Nick can attest that its just simple, silly, high scoring fun, but not a realistic baseball game. Next up is MLB Power Pros, which I got because it was the only Wii baseball game at the time (though its also very silly to see all my favorite players re-created as little floating heads and no legs) and most recently, MLB 08: The Show for PS3. This game is really the one I'd play if I was looking for something close to the real deal. Yes, the gameplay needs some balancing (but less so than the other 2) but seeing the realistic players and stadiums is always nice. Anyway, let me get onto the actual topic at hand here.

Big news (maybe?) on the way
By iamaredmage on 03.20.08 at 03:03 AM CST [permalink] |
Ok, ridiculously short post, I know, I know. I'll see if I can post anything else this week, too.
However, we may or may not be having big news on the way in the gaming world. The news being that the decision on Jack Thompson would happen during the month of March. This being March 19th, we could be hearing a decision about whether or not JT will be disbarred from practicing law within the next 2 weeks. Exciting!
In the meantime, GamePolitics has been showing the testimonies of Thompson's Bar Trial. It is in several parts. More will come, but here are the first and second parts of GP's coverage. Also, read JT's threat to GamePolitics. Quite funny. Alright, I'll inform you guys more as it develops.

Music Overload?

So now it seems that we're about 6 or 7 months (stateside) removed from getting new numerical entries in the Guitar Hero and Rock Band series. Well, Guitar Hero seems certain, but Rock Band is a definite possibility. I wish they would actually man up and do the thing we want. You know, just release new SONGS, not an all new game. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of the Guitar Hero series (and Rock Band as well) and I don't have so much of an issue giving them my money. I just don't like that it would be easier and cheaper for all involved if they just kept releasing songs as DLC. The fact of the matter is, the visuals are only going to receive marginal upgrades, at best, so why not do us all a favor and let us PICK the songs we want to get? Honestly, the only time they can really justify paying full price for these new titles will be when they can incorporate user music (yeah, imagine your entire iTunes library as playable in Guitar Hero 7!), and until then, the DLC model for upgrades should suit us fine.
Its not that I blame them for trying to make money. They are, after all, a business. It just makes me sad to see Guitar Hero becoming the new industry whore. We've had 4 games with only 3 numerical entries thus far, we have the promise of Guitar Hero 4, Guitar Hero Aerosmith, and now, Guitar Hero Beatles? I think we're overdoing it a bit here.

Lateness, Stupidity and Tidbits
By TetsuoTrunks on 03.18.08 at 03:34 AM CST [permalink] |
So while Friday's update was supposed to be not much more than a collection of random bits, it was in fact supposed to be posted on Friday. That, obviously, did not happen. As such, I'm going to do Friday's post tonight and the post I had planned for tonight tomorrow. Here we go.
I ordered a Dual Shock 3 controller, and was surprised to see that it did not come with a charge cable. The only controller on the market that comes with a rechargeable battery as the standard, does not also come with a charging cable for it. So, in theory, you could have 4 controllers and only 1 charge cable between them. Now, granted, its not a proprietary wire by any stretch of the imagination, and it isn't even like Sony sells a PS3 brand of said cable, it just seems stupid to NOT have included something that basic.

Gaming News Bits
By iamaredmage on 03.13.08 at 03:36 AM CST [permalink] |
This is a slow week for gaming news. Gaming itself, well, yeah. I'm leaving that one alone as to save myself from angry Europeans.
Normally, this would be an intro to my topic of the week, but T.T. took my first idea and I have no backup, so I decided, with the lack of news to cover an 8-Bits for tonight, that I'll take what I've got and expand briefly on each topic.

So I know its kind of lame, but I'm gonna use this space to expand a bit more on Brawl, what I like, what I don't, etc. How is this any different than any other website's 'hands on preview'? Simple...I'll be doing this wearing a monkey suit and having porcupines shoved down my pants at the time.
Ok, so no, its not really different, but I'll also provide opinions with stuff. And once again, I'll try to keep things spoiler free.

| So it took a few hours longer than expected, but here is it; the first Button Masher's episode of 2008! Brian, Nick and I decided it was a good idea to give a farewell tribute to Smash Bros Melee, and here is the result of that drunken romp. It clocks in at a hefty 43.3 Megs and just over 47 minutes. Its available now in the podcast section, so check it out. Feedback, as always, is appreciated. |

There will be a post either late tomorrow or early Saturday, I can promise you that. And, if everything works out the way I want it to, it'll even be worth the wait. Sorry for the tease, but at least I've got something good to compensate for it. See you soon.

To start, this is not a normal post. This is not a rant, nor a news flash. This is not a bashing, a beating, or even simple mention.
This...is a tribute and praise.

More Spacial Problems?
By TetsuoTrunks on 03.04.08 at 04:12 AM CST [permalink] |
So, upon reading this I think I speak for all of us anticipating this title when I say "SRSLY?!?" Blu-ray, the mighty 50 gigs of storage space, is too small? Even AFTER compression? I mean, we all knew this would happen eventually, but after less than 3 years (of a supposedly 10 year product lifespan), we're running out of room?
First and foremost, lets step back here for a second. Number one, this isn't just ANYONE filling up a blu-ray disc. We've heard this song and dance before. There was a flurry back when it looked like Insomniac was trying to pull a fast one. But this is Hideo Kojima. Anyone who's played one of the previous Metal Gear games, love them or hate them, has to admit he has style. He's the Quentin Tarantino of gaming; his directorial prowess is cult in status because he isn't QUITE mainstream, but you know every time you're going to get more of exactly what you love. Brilliant visuals, gameplay to match and over the top, beautifully executed action. In other words, if there was anyone that I'd think could really fill up over 50 gigs (and believe me, I'd have paid more if it meant Sony put this game on 2 discs and kept everything), then its gotta be Kojima. However, one way or the other, this is nothing but a bad thing.

PlayStation Network: Daylight Robbery

As you may of read, I recently downloaded the free Patapon demo from the website version of the PlayStation Store. While I was there I was incredibly tempted to download the PSone classic "Theme Hospital" for the bargain basement price of 3.49, but something stopped me. It wasn't a problem with my PSP hardware or the Store itself. It wasn't even the price, which I actually felt was a great deal.
The real problem was this:
