Button Mashers is a periodic audio podcast covering a range of topics in the gaming industry. This blog was created for myself, Tetsuotrunks, as well as a few guest co-hosts, to contribute our 2 cents on topics that really don't warrant any discussion, or to just express things that we'd like to get off our chests. Check back often, as we update frequently and feel free to leave any feedback.

Biccy's Corner-Round 2
By TetsuoTrunks on 05.30.08 at 10:05 PM CST
Hey all. T.T. here, once again posting on behalf of Biccy. Just wanted to note that MTV (yes, THAT MTV) is going a really great series on reviews and how they work INSIDE the gaming industry. I've included the link here for your reading pleasure. Some really worthwhile stuff in there. See you all on Monday. -T.T.

"So, since last week I've really been thinking into which track the Wii is heading. Like I said before, if you haven't got friends or don't want them in case they steal your secret recipe for ultimate thumb moving power...then I can't really see the Wii being for you.

Mainly I've been thinking on the way Ninty have been heading with the Wii. I know, I know, ultimately all they want is the money and they don't *really* give a rats arse about all us poor gaming kitty-cats clawing at their ankles, looking sad as we pine for more gaming-food. But it just seems to me they at Ninty are really aiming for all those casual grandparents/mums/under 10's who like to occasionally turn on the old white-box to play some golf or laugh at grandpa because he can't use the balance board. They say they're aiming for hardcore gamers too but it doesn't really seem like it to me.

I wouldn't even consider myself that hardcore. But every time Nintendo release a game with "Wii" in it's title it usually makes me let out a little sigh, as if Nintendo used to be my best friend but found a new crowd of buddies to play with.
I like Wii sports and Wii Fit is obviously zomgwtf-fantastic looking at it's sales. But yet another brain training or fit game or game that tests if you've been getting enough sunlight during the day doesn't appeal to me. And we all know the third party additions so far have been few in the decent department.

So where does that leave people like me? Waiting around for the next big Ninty game I suppose. That and waiting for the occasional multiplayer game that doesn't want to tell me how I can improve myself. The worrying thing is, I shouldn't really be waiting for something that has no predetermined date. If I'm waiting it's because I can't wait to play something, not waiting to find out if there's anything to play.

I guess I'll have to wait and see and hope games like Mario Kart and Brawl keep me busy until Ninty make the next Metroid game, while batting away Wii Love (© Alex).

I'll leave it up to you. Do you think there's enough games to entertain those used to old age Ninty? Because if they're not careful, folks like me will start to doubt the big N.

I think Peter More had it right. Buy a Wii and a 360 and you will have all the gaming you will ever need at the same price as the so called competition.

I kinda have to agree with Joe-Bob here. I've been going back to my PS2 titles a LOT more than I have on my Wii games. The fact is, the system has a few stellar standouts (Zelda, Mario, Brawl) a few 'great because they're different' titles (Zack and Wiki, No More Heroes) and beyond that...not a whole heck of a lot worth playing. Honestly, if you told me today I HAD to put in 3 or more hours on one title, I'd be just as likely to pick up Wii Sports as I would to take any other game. I can't say there's an excess of titles on the other systems I'm dying to try out, but for all of the Wii's 'differentness', its really kind of a let down for those of us who liked the old fashion ways of gaming. One big trend that the Wii bucks that I can do without is this idea that 'visual realism' in gaming means 'removing any color that isn't brown or black'.

I think Wii is at its best when you have a big group of people around. Sure it dosn't have that many single player experiences, however the time I've spent with friends on Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Mario Kart, Guitar Hero III, Wario Ware, Mario Strikers Charged and in the future Brawl have been some of my best gaming moments in a long time.

As Joe-Bob (sign up to the forum dudey) points out though, the cheapness of Wii does allow it to be that second system. Becuase I'll tell you now, local multiplayer on 360 is pretty ass. Most games only have two player split screen (if that), the controllers are expensive and the modes little fun (local multiplayer FPS's have died).

The Wii has some great local multiplayer, and wiimotes seem to rain from the sky around here, which is what I think its best at.

Single player, not so much.

T.T basically summed how I feel about it pretty well. I'm likely to play bowling as anything else.

And yeah I'm very glad I have a 360 now, as the Wii is definitely a second console as Joshie said. It's great for multiplayer, I'll certainly agree there...maybe I just need to get used to the fact that I probably won't be on it 24/7 due to it being a second console.
