Button Mashers is a periodic audio podcast covering a range of topics in the gaming industry. This blog was created for myself, Tetsuotrunks, as well as a few guest co-hosts, to contribute our 2 cents on topics that really don't warrant any discussion, or to just express things that we'd like to get off our chests. Check back often, as we update frequently and feel free to leave any feedback.

The next round of games is....umm...anyone?
By TetsuoTrunks on 05.20.08 at 12:54 PM CST
As I mentioned in my last post, still looking for someone to help out the blog. PM TetsuoTrunks if you're interested. Not a lot of work, but I'd really appreciate someone helping out.

So, the summer is nearly upon us. And here in the US, summer means exactly one thing to gamers. NO NEW TITLES! And while it makes sense that no one is dumb enough to try and release something during the summer, it does make things aggravating. Actually, this summer seems to be a bit of an exception; we have MGS4 coming in June and Europe is getting Brawl this summer. But beyond that, for summer gaming there's....umm....well....thats the thing. I can't think of anything else. Not just for this summer though. For 2008. Are we in trouble?

First things first; there is of course the obvious solution to the lack of games. We all go outside to play or get jobs....ok, now that I got that out of my system, lets move on.

Seriously, there doesn't seem to be a ton coming out that I'm really interested in this year. Spore has some obviously MAJOR potential, but until its out and we see it isn't pretty broken, thats all it has. LittleBigPlanet is only going to be as fun as the numerous penis jokes and nazi paraphernalia that will inevitably invade it and have to be removed. Gears of War 2? Yeah, cause the Xbox 360 doesn't have NEARLY enough shooters. And no, having this one be a third person shooter as opposed to a first person shooter does NOT make it better. I shouldn't even bother with the Wii. Name, off the top of your head, 2 Wii titles coming out after Brawl's Europe date this year. Not WiiWare, actual Wii disc titles. I'll even give you one; Rayman Raving Rabbids 3. Now name another. Yeah, I thought so. They supposedly have some amazing stuff, but until we see it, I call 'bull'.

So what then? Nothing really revolutionary or seemingly fresh (Mass Effect, Bioshock). 2008 is going to have VERY few major established franchises (read:more than one game up to this point) release a title. Smash Bros. Metal Gear. Devil May Cry. GTA. Anyone got another? And this is supposed to be the high point of the console life cycle. Its too early to port titles to the 'next gen', and at the same time, devs have had enough time to dig around and see what their systems can really do. But there really doesn't seem to be much coming out this year. Maybe its better this way. I suppose it'd be worse if there was lots of hype for a 'late 2008' title NOW, it'd make them seem that much more desperate. As it stands, there isn't even that much hype (commercial wise) for MGS4 just yet. Its not that I think the developers will leave us high and dry for the remaining 7+ months; I'm just a bit surprised we know nothing.
