Button Mashers is a periodic audio podcast covering a range of topics in the gaming industry. This blog was created for myself, Tetsuotrunks, as well as a few guest co-hosts, to contribute our 2 cents on topics that really don't warrant any discussion, or to just express things that we'd like to get off our chests. Check back often, as we update frequently and feel free to leave any feedback.

WiiWare vs. PSN vs. XBLA
By iamaredmage on 05.15.08 at 02:44 AM CST
So, Nintendo's WiiWare service came out this past Monday, and now the circle is complete with all 3 consoles having downloadable games at a price.

So, after looking at Nintendo's first line of titles (and none of them are first party, which is a first), I thought to myself: Which service will be the best one to have further on down the road?

(Un-?)Fortunately, I didn't have to think long before I decided it's the XBLA service that will be the service to have. Mostly because they were the first to do it, and most companies like to jump on the newest thing, so XBLA will usually have the best stuff (Penny Arcade, Pac-Man, etc.). However, Nintendo will be a close second.

Nintendo, while their opening lineup isn't that impressive (though Lost Winds looks to be a worthy purchase), they will get much higher quality material in the later months. A good example is Dr. Mario Wii. Simple, addicting gameplay with online matches for around $10. That will sell greatly.

And I'm sure more will come: either simple, addicting color games with online (to fit the casual audiences) or maybe, JUST MAYBE, a full online MMO (Animal Crossing, anyone?).

And the PSN will be 3rd. Not because they'll deliver bad games, but they really just don't seem to have a following, and it doesn't look to get any better with time.

...but, then again, maybe I'll be wrong.

Random Thoughts:

-EA lost $454 million? Bet ya most of it was spent trying to acquire Take Two.

-Lost Winds for WiiWare MUST be popular if the Statue of Liberty?

Gamers must be thinking of one thing upon seeing it: Target practice!!!

-Finally got a copy of Earthbound for playing. It's pretty fun so far. I will probably go into greater detail once I've played more.

-So, decision time: Pokemon Mystery Dungeon DS or Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles DS? I need a long RPG for the DS, and I can't decide which. Anyone willing to help?

Ok, that does it for this week. However, I'm finally going to blog here this weekend. It's something I thought about doing for a long time, and I'll present it this weekend.

See you then!
