Podcast

Button Mashers is a periodic audio podcast covering a range of topics in the gaming industry. This blog was created for myself, Tetsuotrunks, as well as a few guest co-hosts, to contribute our 2 cents on topics that really don't warrant any discussion, or to just express things that we'd like to get off our chests. Check back often, as we update frequently and feel free to leave any feedback.

Remembering the Creator
By iamaredmage on 03.05.08 at 07:21 PM CST
To start, this is not a normal post. This is not a rant, nor a news flash. This is not a bashing, a beating, or even simple mention.

This...is a tribute and praise.

Gary Gygax, also known as the creator of Dungeons and Dragons, has passed away Tuesday morning. He was 69.

Whether you have played D&D for 7 hours once to get a single weapon or have never touched a single book at all (I never played D&D much myself), Gygax impacted not just the Role Playing Industry, but all of the gaming industry. Without his contributions, we would have never experienced such games as the Ultima series, the Warcraft series, or even the Final Fantasy series. Gary introduced what it truly meant to be an RPG-er, and every RPG afterwards has been either borrowed or taken directly from D&D, from HP to magic to character classes.

Heck, the entire video game industry may not have come to fruition without Gary Gygax. Most people who got into Dungeons and Dragons when it first started were computer programmers. These programmers, once they figured out that you can make and play games on computers, wrote in adventures that took place during their D&D campaigns. Simply put, we, as a gaming industry, wouldn't be anywhere near where we are today without a simple game about rolling dice and using the power of imagination (with the help of a rulebook, of course).

Farewell, Gary. You will be remembered and missed.
