Button Mashers is a periodic audio podcast covering a range of topics in the gaming industry. This blog was created for myself, Tetsuotrunks, as well as a few guest co-hosts, to contribute our 2 cents on topics that really don't warrant any discussion, or to just express things that we'd like to get off our chests. Check back often, as we update frequently and feel free to leave any feedback.

This is either brilliance or madness
By TetsuoTrunks on 02.20.08 at 09:48 PM CST
So today, I went ahead with a decision I'd been on the fence about for some time. I went ahead and bought a PS3. Now, I know, I've done nothing but bash Sony for months, why the sudden turnaround? Well, lets just say the situation that presented itself made too much sense to ignore.

So I found a used 60 gig PS3 on Amazon.com, with 3 games, for $350. So under HALF what this would have all cost me new. And see, my problem with committing to a system to complement the Wii was that most of what I wanted was on 360, but MGS4 was too much of a force to ignore. Now, I don't have that problem. My plan is simple. I'm going to have the PS3 from now until the time I beat MGS4. I have some PS2 titles I can play, and if i REALLY feel like it, maybe I'll pick up Assassin's Creed or The Orange Box, but thats really unlikely. Then, when MGS4 comes out, I'll be able to play it. I might even drop the $50 to pick up a rumbling PS3 controller. Once I'm done with that (and maybe I'll let a friend or 2 play it quickly), I'll throw the whole thing on ebay and see about making some money off of it. Is it entirely possible, even likely that I'll lose money on this deal? I'll say totally possible, but I don't think I'd say I'm LIKELY to lose money. Its a system that will have been out of production for over a year by the point that I'll return it to the market. It will come with a few games and a few controllers. And the nice thing about it being a piece of electronic equipment, as opposed to something like a car, is that mileage is less of a concern. It'll be a 2 and a half year old system, sure. But I don't have to worry about how much its been played. As long as its working when I sell it, and provided I ship it properly, I should be able to pull down the kind of money that other people have been getting for these things. Am I going to be quadrupling my investment like some people did when the system first came out? No, but I should be able to come out ahead. And if nothing else, I'll have, in my own mind at the very least, beaten the system. I won't be paying Sony for the experience to use their machine, and I won't even be paying a cost they dictated. Excessive? Maybe, especially considering that MGS4 is likely coming to 360 anyway. But you know what? I'm taking a risk, giving this a shot, and hoping for the best. And when its all said and done, I'll be able to hear Liquid Snake shreaking "SNAAAAAAAAAKE" well before many of my friends. In my mind, its worth it.
