Button Mashers is a periodic audio podcast covering a range of topics in the gaming industry. This blog was created for myself, Tetsuotrunks, as well as a few guest co-hosts, to contribute our 2 cents on topics that really don't warrant any discussion, or to just express things that we'd like to get off our chests. Check back often, as we update frequently and feel free to leave any feedback.

Yep, more Jack Thompson
By iamaredmage on 02.20.08 at 09:47 PM CST
What a day we had yesterday, huh? All the Brawl info is out there thanks to leaked copies. Now, I did have some thoughts on the lineup, but since TestuoTrunks beat me to it (and advised that no one speak or write of it to preserve the innocent), I decided upon a different topic; my Monday finding of Jack Thompson defending Mass Effect.

Now, I'll be the first to admit my shock when good ol' Jacko did something completely unexpected and defended Mass Effect. I think what was more shocking was the lack of gamer response to Thompson's statement. While the populus was, indeed, shocked upon initial reading of the statement (and I'll stop using the word 'shocked' now), the response was very sub-par, given the usual response to a Thompson article.

This says one of two things:

1) Jack Thompson is trying to portray a 'good guy' image while his disbarment trial is going on. The theory is if he defends some violent video games, it might make him look better in the eye of the judge, and that Thompson would not be disbarred from practicing law in Florida. The lack of response to Jack's statement shows that gamers aren't buying it one bit, and the judge shouldn't, either. Considering, the day before, Jack Thompson vowed to stop Take Two's release of Grand Theft Auto IV (as he always does when Take Two releases a game), this should be proof enough that Jack Thompson's backing of Mass Effect is nothing short of a muse.

Some people would say that Jack Thompson only goes after games made by Take Two. If that's true, then explain when Jack Thompson tried to prevent Halo 3 from hitting the shelves (even though he was a tad late on that), or when Thompson blamed CounterStrike for the Virginia Tech shootings, or the various military games that supposedly increases crime within the U.S. All I'm asking is this: If Jack Thompson has vowed to take action on so many other shooting, violent video games, how is Mass Effect any different? Something's up, and I don't like it.

2) Jack Thompson may very well be not in touch with reality and is plunging further and further into the Insanity Pool, though that really shouldn't be a surprise to anyone, should it?
